I don't really have that much to say at the moment. Life is good but hectic. This week, I have a variety of moderately-sized assignments to do, and I'm also trying to figure out what classes I'll take next quarter, which is turning into a rather overwhelming and complicated task. But college life is definitely still fun, even if it is quite hectic. I'm about to go to Tapas with my Spanish Civil War class, but I wanted to stop in to post. Mainly to talk about the main thing that's been on my mind today, which is tomorrow.
I know a lot of Americans (including a lot of people my age) have lost faith in the American government, in our political system. And to an extent, that breaks my heart, because I have not. I believe in Barack Obama.
And I know that tomorrow will be one of the most important days in my entire life.
I dare not make predictions. Even thinking about tomorrow sets loose a crazy sting of emotions in me like I haven't felt in a long time. It's like Regionals last year, except this time the outcome affects the whole world, instead of a just our team.
And I fear, I really do, but among all that fear, there is hope, trying to poke its head up inside me.
And so I sing, and I dance, and I scream "YES WE CAN!"
And I dare to call on those blue skies...
The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.
Let's paint America blue tomorrow!
So I'm back from Gettysburg. Actually, I got back two hours ago almost, but it's taken me about an hour to catch up on my flist.

And now, after much avoidance of the stuff, I must follow my dad's suggestion and "do something productive" before the evening totally gets away from me. How sad. I really don't feel like doing anything on my to do list, but since there's only a week, I had better get my ass moving. And yes, it's STILL raining, but since I'm in the house, I don't mind.
Oh, and for the 95% of you who just skipped the last 2,500 words of historical minutia ... in short, Gettysburg was really, really, really awesome.
OMG! I had such a crazy day at work. There's so much on my mind right now, I feel like I'm going to explode. So, if you're interested in two very interesting stories and some other life generalness, click away.
Work today was very weird, one of those strange days where there was all this stuff to do and I really didn't get any downtime. There are new receipts piling up left and right, and we have no where to put them on the floor or in the stockroom, so there is much chaos. I don't even know why I bother to care anymore, seeing as I'm leaving in a week. (Thank god for that.) Quite literally, a week from today will be my last day. But it's hard to just sit around when the only people I work with now are the manager, the OCD lady, and the new girl who cares because she's knew.
But around 4:30, just as I was about to settle in to working a bunch of monotonous projects for the night, something very exciting happened. Joe, one of the guys from Loss Prevention came down and asked me to be a witness. For a short backstory, a few weeks ago, when he had nothing better to do, Joe came downstairs and had some of the Lands' End girls sign a waiver to be witnesses when he needs to apprehend a suspect. So, he came and found me this afternoon and I got to stop hanging jeans and ringing customers, which was very nice. I took off my name badge and followed him around the store. Ryan was watching the girl upstairs on the cameras and giving Joe updates on his walkie talkie, telling him that she was still putting things in her purse and where she was. She stayed in men's for a while, and since we had to linger but still look like shoppers, we pretended to look for rings at the jewelry counter. I think we all (including the jewelry lady) had a little too much fun with that. She was taking rigns out and telling us about how we would save 40% with our Sears card, etc. But then Ryan said that she had went out the door in men's, so we got to run after her. As she was just getting into the parking lot, Joe ran in front of her, and told her that she had been seen shoplifting. Then the three of us went up to the LP office and he dug a bunch of pairs of underwear out of her purse. And then I sat there for like an hour while they processed paperwork. I had to fill out a short bit of paperwork myself, but mostly I had to sit there so they had an official witness for the whole thing. And at the end, the State Police came, cuffed her and took her away. I felt bad for her at times, because she seemed really upset. And she kept giving me these pleading looks, probably because I'm the only person she dealt with during the whole process who wasn't 6 feet tall or a former Marine. But then when the police officer was there, she was talking about how she had citations for disorderly conduct and underage drinking on multiple occasions. And I was less sympathetic.
Wow, that was a long story. But that was only the beginning of my night. Unfortunately, the rest wasn't nearly as fun, because it involved me being alone with the new Lands' End girl, Erin, for several hours. I don't know if I've ever talked about her here before, but none of us are particularly jazzed with her. I already knew from the other days I had worked with her that the she was pretty religious and definitely Republican (the latter has a lot to do with the former in her case). But tonight was a whole other level of distressing. I already didn't like this girl (because she grew up in the school district that is diametrically opposed to my own) but now I'm pretty sure I can't really talk to her any more. I also found it very hard to be nice to her after the first day when she said that gay people are sinful, if for no other reason than the fact that I have a gay friend who I'd take a bullet for any day, and that kind of thing is so hard for me to swallow. I thought I had had our outrageous moment of the night when she said that women shouldn't be president, because "they might PMS and blow something up." (I almost had a stroke when she said that.) But then, later in the night, she saw my copy of the Darwin biography that I'm reading for the One Book, One Northwestern. In short, here's what transpired:
Erin: What's that?
Me: A biography of Darwin. Everyone at Northwestern has to read it this year.
E: Oh, so you believe in evolution?
Me: Yes.
E: So you don't believe in creation.
Me: I don't know what I believe, but I do believe in evolution.
E: So do you think we came from fish or monkeys?
And then I tried to explain some of the basic ideas of evolution, but I also said that it had been a while since I studied it, and I wasn't really able to explain anything PROPERLY. Then she goes off on this big religious tangent about creation and sin. And there was lots of discussion of how if you don't accept Jesus Christ as your savior you're going to hell.
Basically, it was a really fun night. So fun that as soon as we parted ways at the end of the night, I literally ran in the other direction. As soon as I got in the car, I called my coworker Hannah, and said "Get yourself a big suitcase and come with me to Northwestern, because I'm not leaving you with this psycho for a whole year.
Now, just to clarify something, I don't have a problem with people being religious, but please leave me out of it. I don't like someone telling me that my loved ones are going to hell. Especially when also goes around saying, "I don't judge people."
In other news from the evening, I went out and got my copy of For Whom The Bell Tolls, which is one of the novels we're reading in my freshmen seminar on the Spanish Civil War. Professor Fahey suggested we get a head start on it, since its 500 pages, but its not really required summer reading. But I'm excited to read it, I think it'll make a nice intro to the course, building on the somewhat limited intro I've already had during the war. I'm also kind of ashamed that I've never read any Hemmingway, but now I won't be able say that.
So I'm probably going to read that after I finish this post and reading my flist, although I'll probably be too tired. It is late, but at least I don't have to go to work until 2 tomorrow. But I've got to clean a bunch in the morning.
Oh, and one final tidbit. After I was had split off from Erin and was just about to leave, I ran into Joe again.
Me: *briefly rants about aforementioned Erin!torture*
Me: According to Erin, you're going to hell.
Joe: Oh, really, why?
Me: I'm sure we could pick from a pretty good sized list of reasons.
Joe: Like what?
Me: Your adventures in college to start with....
Joe: Where are you hearing this stuff?
Me: You told me. And Floyd. (One of Joe's friends who is the manager of the cashiers.)
Joe: Don't listen to Floyd.
Me: Okay, sure.
Me: *opens door and steps halfway through it*
Joe: It was self defense when I gouged that guy's eye out.
Me: Wait....What?.... Scratch that, I don't want to know.
My fanmix is finally done. I'm really proud of it because I put a lot of work into it and I made artwork for the first time. I got my laptop for college! It's at Staples right now getting loaded with software, but I should be going to pick it up sometime in the next two hours. I'm ridiculously exited. It's an HP. I really already knew (for a week) that this was the exact model I was getting, I just had to make sure everything would work out and fit NU's requirements. I also got a security chord and a wireless mouse. I'm really excited about the latter because it's pink and adorable. But now I'll have to add to my to-do list finding a cute mousepad.
Anyway, to celebrate my new purchase, and the end of this yardsale madness, I changed out my icons. Woot!
Not too much on the plate for tomorow, just some violin practice and work for 5.5 hours. The family is clean again, but my bedroom still needs some major help. Maybe I should work on that while I'm waiting for the guy to call about my laptop. Oh, I'm so excited to get it home and play with it.
Also, I watched the Twilight preview from the Penelope DVD. It was cute -- I think RPattz and KStew have the makings of some great chemistry, although I'm still not totally sold. And I still find his Edward a bit creepy.
And where the hell are my AP scores?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
Speaking of fun at dad's and the fun I had there yesterday...I knew the mosquitoes were getting to me yesterday, but I had no idea how madly. But I just counted, and I have 36 bug bites on my legs. Not fun.
In other news, still no sign of my AP scores. The College Board really does seem determined to extract every last ounce of pain out of me that they can. I got my schedule for next week, and I'm back to working 23 hours, which is good. I have Wednesday and Thursday off, so I should figure out something to do on one of those days. As soon as I'm done this post, however, I'm going to have to attack the family room, because my crap is seriously about to swallow me whole. And that would be unfortunate.
I watched the Northwestern video. It was really pretty terrible, but it got me excited nonetheless. Also exciting, my friend, Tara, who always dreamed of going to Smith, finally got off the waitlist and got the aid she needed, so she's going. I'm massively excited. It will also be very nice because I can visit her and Hayley at the same time. I still haven't had any luck convincing Dad to let me visit Caroline at Pitt on the way to NU, he's got the usual stick up his butt. Oh, and I think its about time to switch up my icons soon.
Okay, enough totally random rambling about life. I did have another purpose with this post. Just some YouTube goofiness which I'm hoping the Gilmore Girls fans on my flist will enjoy.

My room and the family room are in absolute chaos because I've been digging out stuff for the yardsale, which is going to be Saturday. Combine that with some general messiness and the fact that I brought a bunch of stuff home from Dad's yesterday and its really bad. So I still have a few hours until I go to work, and I think I'll use that mostly to try and chip away at the mess. After all, I can't read Beneath A Marble Sky, because Mom took it downtown with her. She still hasn't started, even though our bookclub meeting is on Thursday. On the other hand, my window to finish those last 60 odd pages is growing ever smaller.
Christine and I went to see Wanted yesterday. It was very entertaining and I definitely recommend it. James McAvoy was quite sexy in it. Then we went to Borders for about two hours. We ran into to some friends from school there, otherwise we definitely wouldn't have stayed as long. I didn't buy anything, mostly because I've got enough books at home to keep me occupied for a while. Maybe I should start my next book today, since I'm so close to being done Beneath A Marble Sky.
While I'm on the topic of things to buy, however, I think I seriously need seasons 4 and/or 5 of Gilmore Girls, because I've watched 2,3, and 6 way too much. I also still haven't bought the third Pirates, which is important, because I'd like to try to unravel it, if that's possible. And I want to buy Pan's Labyrinth, especially so Christine and I can watch it, but when I looked yesterday, it was $35!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mostly because it was a two disc, which kind of sucks because I don't want a two disc for that movie. So, for all of these things, I'll have to keep an eye out for where I can get them real cheap.

The Declaration of Independence then continues for another few pages listing all the crap that the king of England pulled during the 1760's and 1770's. I actually have in front of me my book The Essential Thomas Jefferson which is really cool because it shows the places where Jefferson's original text was edited. (Notably, where some really long rants were revised.) As you all know, I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with my country, but today on the day that the Declaration was signed (only by about half the signers, but its the thought that counts, right?) I'm definitely living on the love side of the relationship. And so I thought I would take this moment to acknowledge this awesome document written by my historical soulmate, Thomas Jefferson. And to take this moment to wish all my American friends a happy 4th! And to all of you sick of being screwed over by George Bush, all I can say is that TJ probably would have had an anyerism if he met him.
Okay, in other news.... No big plans for today, other than work for a few hours, which is nice because I didn't have any plans, I'm working with Hannah, and I get time and a half. Yesterday, when I was poking around the stockroom, I saw something really exciting. About a week ago, we got in these down vests for men, and I decided that I was going to get Alex one for his birthday. But yesterday I saw that they make them for women too! And, we got them in in Ice Pink, which is beyond gorgeous, so I'm definitely getting one for myself. Katie says she got one last year and she loves it.
In other exciting (at least for me) shopping news, American Eagle is having a clearance on all their Aerie stuff, so I think I'm going to go hit up the store tomorrow or Sunday, because you really can't have too much comfy dorm wear. Also, I'm definitely set on getting a subscription to TeenVogue, although Lucky is still tempting me a bit. But, as if a sign from the gods, the morning after I make this decision I find out that TeenVogue did a photoshoot with the Twilight cast. Those things are always a bit disappointing to see in print because they only show like 1% of the pics they took, but still, I'm excited.
Speaking of pictures, we finally have some from HBP! But where is the f-ing trailer?!?!?! Anyway, I love the one of Luna and the ones with Harry and Ginny in them (shocker!). I hope they show her playing Quidditch. As for the pic from potions, they did really stretch this age factor. And, of all the times to finally have a class of only Gryffindors, they do it in the class where they did actually have people from all four houses! Oi vey! Oh, and if Harry and Ginny don't have their proper kiss, I'm going to riot. I mean, they turned Cho and Harry's kiss into a total make-out session, and now they're going in the other direction?
Oh, and I officially and totally love Kate Nash!
